Biography
Catherine E. Howard is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, where she teaches Trial Practice and Professional Responsibility. Her teaching and scholarship interests include criminal law and procedure, prison abolition and reform, race and the law, critical race theory, and professional responsibility.
Before joining Brandeis Law, Howard served as a staff attorney with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy and previously as an assistant public defender with the Louisville Metro Public Defender Corporation, representing clients in misdemeanor and felony cases from arraignment through trial. Earlier in her career, she practiced civil litigation with O'Melveny & Myers LLP in Los Angeles and represented criminal defendants as a student attorney with the Harvard Law School Criminal Justice Institute.
Howard earned her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, where she served as editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal on Racial and Ethnic Justice and received the David A. Grossman Exemplary Clinical Student Award. She earned her bachelor's degree with distinction and honors from Stanford University, majoring in International Relations with a minor in African & African American Studies. She is admitted to practice law in Kentucky and California.
