Biography

Brett Northrup, MT-BC is a Part Time Lecturer at the University of Louisville School of Music. A board-certified music therapist, his work focuses on how music serves as a gateway to cultural, relational, and rehabilitative practice within a clinical and institutional environment. His teachings emphasize relationship importance within healthcare, education, and community. Brett has worked clinically in hospice, aging, medical rehabilitation, and medical, and continues to work full time as a medical music therapist, serving pediatric oncology. His scholarship examines normalcy, identity, and long-term coping through creative expression. Brett presents often, nationally, on songwriting, community engagement/development, and pediatric oncology. In parallel with his scholarship, Brett creates learning opportunities for students in medical environments, helping students develop clinical and relational skills, fostering experiential learning outside of the classroom to real world environments. As an alum of the University of Louisville School of Music (2012), Brett considers it an honor and a privilege to teach at his alma mater. He seeks every opportunity to learn and grow, and is passionate about research and experience, which helps one become a better clinician and teacher. Brett loves all music and is passionate about music’s ability to meet us where we are in life, helping us connect with our emotions and relate to others.
