Biography

Ayman El-Baz, Ph.D., is a Professor, Distinguished University Scholar, and Chair of the Bioengineering Department at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. His academic journey began with a bachelor’s (1997) and master’s degree (2001) in Electrical Engineering, followed by a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Louisville in 2006.

Dr. El-Baz’s distinguished career has been marked by numerous accolades and recognitions. In 2009, he was named a Coulter Fellow for his substantial contributions to biomedical translational research. His achievements continued to gain prominence, leading to his election as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 2018, recognizing his exceptional contributions to medical imaging and leadership in bioengineering education, scholarship, and service. In 2020, he became a National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow, the first from the Middle East, in recognition of his groundbreaking work in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Medical Imaging (MI).

In 2022, Dr. El-Baz was named a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) for his contributions to biomedical engineering and his leadership within the society. His reputation was further solidified in 2023 when he was elected an IEEE Fellow for his significant advancements in AI in medicine. Additionally, in 2017, he was appointed an ABET program evaluator by the Biomedical Engineering Society, reflecting his expertise in the field.

With 23 years of experience in bio-imaging modeling, big data, AI, and non-invasive computer-assisted diagnosis systems, Dr. El-Baz has served as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigator (Co-I) on 50 funded grants totaling $29 million from agencies such as the NIH, DOD, NSF, and the American Cancer Society. His scholarly contributions include 56 books, 273 papers in high-impact journals, 307 peer-reviewed conference papers, 115 book chapters, 230 abstracts, 43 patents, 2 software licensing technologies, 7 software copyrights, 2 tutorials, and 55 invited talks.

Dr. El-Baz’s research has had a profound impact, with approximately 27,000 citations and an H-index of 82. He is deeply committed to mentoring, having advised numerous master’s and Ph.D. students, with seven of his Ph.D. advisees receiving the prestigious John M. Houchens Dissertation Award. His research group has collectively earned over 200 national and international awards and travel scholarships, further underscoring his influence in the academic and scientific communities.

Research Interests

Dr. Ayman El-Baz’s research interests focus on advancing medical imaging, artificial intelligence (AI), and bioengineering to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic applications. As the Director of the BioImaging Laboratory at the University of Louisville, he has established a globally recognized research team dedicated to oncology research and medical image analysis. His contributions include developing cutting-edge image-guided surgical techniques and non-invasive image-based diagnostic systems, with a special emphasis on early cancer detection and management. His work spans various types of cancers, including lung, prostate, kidney, liver, bladder, breast, brain, and spine cancers​.

 

A key area of Dr. El-Baz’s research is the integration of big data-driven technologies for early cancer diagnosis. His innovative AI-based methodologies have garnered interest from major industry leaders, highlighting their potential impact on global healthcare. His lab has been at the forefront of integrating deep learning and radiomics into medical imaging applications, enabling more precise and automated diagnostic processes​.

 

Beyond oncology, Dr. El-Baz’s research extends to neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and retinal diseases. His team has developed AI-powered analytical tools for brain imaging, contributing significantly to the study of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by identifying imaging biomarkers through computational models. He has also led efforts in developing image-based diagnostic systems for diabetic retinopathy and other retinal conditions, utilizing advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography techniques​.

 

His interdisciplinary collaborations with institutions worldwide have been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of biomedical imaging and AI in medicine. Dr. El-Baz remains committed to innovating AI-driven healthcare solutions that enhance diagnostic accuracy, improve treatment planning, and ultimately transform patient care​.
