An arts & sciences education is a life-long endeavor and has as its goal the development of the intellect in each of us to its full potential. The skills and knowledge you acquire through an arts & sciences education will serve you in every aspect of your life. Those skills and knowledge include:

• The ability to think critically and solve complex problems
• An understanding of the past as a key to understanding the present to improve the future
• The capacity to function effectively across languages and cultures
• A deep and abiding appreciation of art, culture, and the world of ideas

A student pursuing a degree in the College will establish a foundation in the arts & sciences by taking basic courses in English Composition, Oral Communication, Quantitative & Logical Reasoning, Arts & Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, Natural Sciences, History of Civilization, and Cross-cultural Studies or Foreign Languages.

Employers are showing increased interest in arts & sciences graduates. The reason for this interest can be found in the philosophy of a liberal arts education -- the development of the whole person. Arts & sciences majors tend to be flexible and adaptable and able to learn new skills quickly. The skills acquired through this type of education are transferable to many different careers and occupations.

The College of Arts & Sciences provides many opportunities for career preparation. In addition to choosing a major, you will also be able to pursue any of the minors offered by the College or by other units, such as Business.

Cooperative internships are a valuable way to gain work experience in your major field. Degree credit may be awarded by your major department. Additionally, summer study abroad programs are offered through select academic units. You can earn up to six hours of credit towards your degree for your successful participation in one of these programs.

Leadership development is an important part of the whole person. Opportunities to develop leadership experience are available through participation in student government, clubs, organizations, and publications.
