The Children and Youth Project has provided comprehensive care to over 9,000 high-risk infants and children of Jefferson County since 1968. Children from birth through 17 years old who fall 200 percent below the federal poverty level are the main recipients of care.
A multi-disciplinary team approach to health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation remains the standard of care. Medical, dental, nursing, nutrition, speech, social work, laboratory, home health and early developmental intervention services are provided in a coordinated manner.
Participation in the university’s educational training programs is one of the Project's chief missions. The Project staff also play active roles in the community, school, and state. Several are involved in vaccine trials and research on emergency department utilization, early literacy, parental stress in asthma, dental caries and obesity.
Project services include home health and early intervention with nursing, speech and social service staff actively involved. Early literacy is also a key focus of well-child visits. The Project is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and low literacy prevalent in our patient population.
