    Welcome

Monica Ann Shaw, MD, MA, FACP

Welcome to the University of Louisville School of Medicine! As Vice Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, I oversee the medical student experience from application through graduation. I am excited to share the innovations in education and patient care our students experience during their MD program at our School of Medicine. Our mission is to recruit, educate, and develop the physicians needed to improve the health of our community, and to serve our community as we train physicians for 21st century practice. Students come to UofL to experience diverse classroom, clinical, and community settings during their medical training, and gain an appreciation for the city and the region through involvement in our local and state community during their education. We welcome applicants, students, and visitors to learn more about our work to provide Kentucky with the talented, compassionate, and knowledgeable physicians needed to improve the health of our commonwealth now and in the future!

Our program has several areas of excellence that help us better serve our students and our community:

    • The Distinction Track program mentors MD program students with exceptional interest in Global Health, Business and Leadership, Medical Education, or Research through a three-year curriculum and scholarly project in their area of focus
    • Healthcare disparities-focused curriculum assists students in developing the tools needed to improve healthcare for underserved patients
    • Team-based learning and Problem-based learning that emphasize teamwork, collaboration, and self-directed learning skills
    • Early clinical exposure and electives in medicine paired with the Careers in Medicine program assists students in choosing their future specialty
    • Wellness programming focuses on the personal journey of becoming a physician, building the resilience and flexibility needed for students to thrive in a demanding career
    • Six College Communities group students together to build peer support and cohesiveness within each class
    • Academic support and coaching assist all students in finding their individual right strategy to learn most effectively in medical school
