Meet Courtney Baron

  • CURRENT POSITION: Assistant Professor and Director of Bridwell Art Library
  • RESPONSIBILITIES: I am responsible for all aspects of directing the Art Library, located at 102 Schneider Hall. This includes purchasing materials for our collection, teaching information literacy classes, providing research assistance for the visual arts, and managing the physical library space. As a tenure-track faculty member, research and service are part of my job. My latest research centers on burnout for academic librarians. I'm active in the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) and serve locally on the board for the Kentucky Foundation for Women. I'm also on the University Libraries’ leadership team for deans and directors and involved in unit-level administration.
  • WHY I JOINED YEP: I’ve been with YEP from the very beginning, when I attended the first interest meeting at the U Club in August 2019. I had just started my position at UofL and I was eager to get involved and meet people across the campus. I’ve been honored to serve as the Co-President and see this employee resource group grow and thrive. YEP is committed to UofL’s mission to be a great place to work for young and emerging professionals.
  • BEST CAREER ADVICE: Use your intuition. If it’s not a YES, don’t do it!

MORE ABOUT COURTNEY

  • Hometown: Atlanta, GA
  • Education: B.A. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Georgia and Latin and M.S. in Library and Information Science from Valdosta State University
  • First Job: Carhop at Sonic
  • Hobbies? Traveling – it’s how I met my fiancé! I love going to restaurants, bars, and museums but also staying in and playing board games (my current favorite is Wingspan). I like being active, especially dance, yoga, walking or hiking, kayaking, and weight training. I bought a house last year and spend a lot of time renovating my 1940s Cape Cod-style bungalow. I enjoy taking care of my houseplants and I’m learning how to garden.
  • What’s at the top of your bucket list? I recently checked off a big item: getting certified as a RYT 200 yoga instructor in the Baptiste methodology. The pandemic caused a lot of delays in my personal life, so I’m looking forward to my destination wedding in Colorado this October, going on our honeymoons (Disney World, where we got engaged, and St. Lucia), and starting our family.
