Gilman International Scholarship Information

Our office holds information sessions each semester.  

General Information 

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program  is a US Department of State (DOS) scholarship that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. The DOS awards over 3,600 students nation-wide up to $5,000. 

  Eligible students are: 

  • US citizens 
  • Undergraduate students in good standing 
  • Pell Grant eligible 

 Eligible programs are: 

  • Pre-approved UofL programs
  • A minimum of three weeks long 
  • Credit-bearing 
  • In a location with a DOS Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2 (Currently, the Gilman will consider applications in destinations that are a higher level due to COVID only. For more information on travel advisories, check out our video seriesor .) 

Timeline 

Application deadlines are every October and March for study abroad programs that begin in the year following the deadline. 

How to Apply 

 Here’s our suggested step-by-step: 

  1.  Attend Gilman Information Session 
  2.  to set up a meeting to find a program that fits your needs 
  3. Once you have a program picked out, meet with a study abroad advisor to receive UofL paperwork and a budget 
  4. Get your budget approved by financial aid 
  5. Work on your Gilman application, including drafting your essays 
  6. Workshop your essays with us (email )
  7. Finalize essays 
  8. Submit your application 

Program Providers With Additional Gilman or Pell grant Awards

Gilman Applicant Awards  

You are eligible for these awards if you apply for a Gilman. 

  • CIEE Gilman Scholarship Applicant Scholarship (up to $2500). Search CIEE programs 
  • CIS Abroad Gilman Applicant Grant (up to $750 towards your flights), Search CIS programs

Gilman Recipient Awards  

You are eligible for these awards if you receive a Gilman. 

  • AIFS Gilman Recipient Match ($500 for semester, $250 for summer). Search AIFS programs
  • API Gilman Scholarship Recipient Match (up to $1000 for semester, $500 for internship). Search API programs 
  • Arcadia Gilman Scholarship Recipient Match ($1000 for semester, $500 for summer). Search Arcadia programs
  • SRAS Challenge Grant ($300-$750). Search SRAS programs

 Pell Grant Awards  

You are eligible for these awards if you receive a Pell Grant.
