Steps to Studying Abroad

Step 1: Have an open mind! With so many countries to choose from, consider what classes you need, your budget, and language requirements to narrow down your program options.

Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor by completing this form once you have narrowed your choices or made a final decision.

Step 3: Obtain paperwork from a Study Abroad Advisor, most importantly the course equivalency form and budget.

Step 4: Meet with appropriate department contacts (you will receive their contact information from your study abroad advisor) and your academic advisor to approve classes and with Financial Aid to complete budget forms.

Step 5: Apply to your study abroad program online and wait for an acceptance email!

Step 6: Apply for a passport and visa (if needed). Passports can take 10-13 weeks to arrive. Your program provider will assist you in obtaining a visa.

Step 7: Turn in ALL completed paperwork to the Office of Study Abroad and International Travel. You must also register for CISI Travel Insurance. As of January 1, 2020, CISI is free for all international travelers going abroad with UofL affiliated programs. CISI will NOT include personal time. Check out our insurance section here for more information and to register

Step 8: Attend the mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation the term before you study abroad.

Step 9: Go Abroad and have the experience of a lifetime!
