General FAQs
Students and employees who park at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium must move their vehicles before 7:30 a.m. on the days of home football games. Failure to move any vehicle from the Stadium parking lots could result in a citation and/or impoundment at the owner’s expense. Alternate parking for students and employees will be made available at near or in the KFEC (Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center). Access to KEC will be granted at no charge as long as the University member has a valid UofL parking permit with them. Additional instructions will be emailed to permit holders before the game and posted on the University Parking website and Facebook page. Overnight parking is NEVER available at PJCS.
No, Parking Services does not condone this activity as short-term legal parking. If your vehicle is illegally parked, no matter the duration, you may receive a parking citation. This applies to all spaces on campus: regular spaces, disabled spaces, services areas, etc. In addition to visitor pay parking in the Floyd Street Garage and at 4th and Cardinal Blvd, parking meters are available throughout campus and on city streets to accommodate short-term parking.
Any state-issued accessible permit may park only in visitor areas. A UofL Accessible parking permit is required for all UofL accessible parking spaces. Accessible permit applications are available on the University Parking website and in the parking offices. All applications will be forwarded to the provided doctor for approval. UofL Accessible permits are valid only on UofL's campuses.
Visitor permits may be purchased for $6 per day in the parking office or printed on the University Parking website. You can also purchase a virtual permit through the ParkMobile App.
Permit FAQs
Free parking is available after 7:30 p.m. daily and on weekends. Handicapped and Yellow, Orange and Brown resident parking lots require a proper permit 24/7.
No, the only person who may use a permit is the person to whom the permit was issued. All permits are non-transferable. If someone other than the owner is caught using a permit a costly citation and impoundment could result as well as loss of parking privileges. Any recovered lost permits should be returned to University Parking.
Parking permits are sold on an academic year basis and are prorated by semester. Permits returned before January 31st are eligible for a prorated refund.
Permits should be reported lost in the Parking Office. Upon completion of a lost/stolen permit report, a replacement permit may be purchased for $20.
Absolutely not. When a permit is reported lost, it is coded as invalid. Any vehicle displaying a lost permit will be significantly fined and impounded. Please return a recovered permit to the parking office. If a replacement permit was purchased, the $20 replacement fee may be refunded when the original permit is returned.
Yes, a prorated price difference or refund will apply to all permit exchanges. Residents moving off campus mid-year must exchange for a commuter permit or the resident permit will be revoked.
Yes, permits registered to the individual person and may be used in any vehicle.
Citation FAQs
Parking citations with remittance may be mailed with the envelope provided, paid in person at either of the Parking Offices on Belknap and Health Sciences Center Campuses, or online via the University Parking website. You may also scan the QR code on the citation to pay.
According to the Parking Rules & Regulations, anyone parking on university property not parked at a meter or in an hourly pay parking lot, must display a valid University of Louisville Permit. In order to ensure a permit is valid, the numbers must be visible from outside the vehicle. It is the owner's responsibility to properly display the permit. Permits are transferable from vehicle to vehicle. The Parking Office will excuse one citation for this violation for each permit holder per academic year if the vehicle was parked legally and the permit was not displayed.
Citations may be appealed within seven days from the issue date. Citations may be appeal online or via a paper form in either parking office.
Campus Shuttle FAQs
The Cardinal Shuttle (94) runs from Cardinal Stadium in a loop around Belknap campus to the Student Activities Center (SAC) Monday – Thursday from 6:40 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday from 6:40 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Buses typically run six to nine minutes apart on a continuous loop.
All campus shuttles and all TARC bus routes are available to the university community free of charge by swiping your valid UofL ID as you board.
Bicycle FAQs
Don't get your bike stolen! Lock Properly:
Bike theft is a significant concern at UofL. Bicyclists are urged to always lock unattended bikes to a bike rack using a sturdy secure u-lock (cable locks have often been found cut by thieves). Bikes should not be locked to anything other than provided racks as they may cause a safety issue.
- Registration acts as a visible theft deterrent; similar programs on other campuses have decreased bicycle thefts.
- Registration has the potential to reduce costs to cyclists. The owner of a registered bike illegally parked or appearing to be abandoned can be contacted directly in certain situations using the information provided during registration, rather than impounding the bicycle and/or cutting the lock.
- Proof of registration can be helpful in filing an insurance claim on a stolen bike.
- Registration aids in theft recovery. Parking & Transportation can flag a registered bike as stolen, provide your serial number for a police report and look for the bike.
All members of the campus community who plan to park a bicycle on campus are encouraged to register the bicycle free of charge.
Carpooling FAQs
You can sign up for the program by contacting us at Carpool@louisville.edu.
Once the carpool inquiry form is completed and submitted, you will be notified of other interested carpoolers in close proximity to your home. It is then the responsibility of the applicants to communicate and establish a carpool. Your information will only be shared with other interested carpoolers within your area.
You can find carpools using UofL's Cardinal Directions trip-planning and carpool-matching service. Register for a free account to post your carpool or communicate with other potential carpoolers.
The carpoolers must decide between themselves the driving, cost sharing, meeting place, drop off point, smoking, music preference, etc. It is strongly suggested that perspective carpoolers meet in advance and discuss all these options.
All members of the carpool would come to University Parking together to purchase the permit. The cost of the permit would then be split between the members. All vehicles of the carpool members will be placed on the permit. One member will be designated the primary contact.
No, students are encouraged to carpool also. The student’s status determines the cost and color code of the parking permit.
There is no extra cost for those who choose to carpool. The permit cost is based on the color of the permit purchased collectively by members of the carpool.
University Parking will issue decals to be affixed to permits to all registered carpools.
UofL offers a wide variety of other affordable, convenient ways to get to/from campus. Explore your options with UofL's free Cardinal Directions trip-planning service.
In a worst-case scenario, employees who have registered their commute in advance with Every Commute Counts can always use the free Emergency Ride Home program covering 100% of the cost of an emergency Lyft/Uber/taxi ride home up to 100 miles, four times per year. You can even stop to pick up the kids on the way home. This protects you in the event of an emergency such as illness, family crisis, or unplanned mandatory overtime.
- A carpool is two or more people (additional riders are welcome and strongly encouraged)
- All members of the carpool must be employed or enrolled at the University of Louisville (student, faculty, staff, etc.)
- A parking permit must be purchased. The cost can be split via payroll deduction by the members of the carpool. The permit fee is based on the permit color. A decal will be affixed to the permit to identify a carpool.
- Carpoolers must park in a color-coded lot that is associated with the cost of the parking permit; in instances where the permit cost is for a reserved lot, the carpool vehicle must use the assigned parking space.
- Only one university parking permit is issued per carpool, and only one of the registered vehicles may be parked in a carpool space at any time.
- Motorcycles, motor scooters, and mopeds are excluded from the carpool program.
- Carpool parking spaces will be added as needed, to accommodate new carpool groups. Carpool spaces will be located in high-demand areas around campus.
- All members of the carpool must sign the application and agreement.
- Each carpool vehicle will need to be registered with University Parking.
- All members of the carpool will need to appear in person at University Parking to register the carpool.
- If a carpool disbands, the carpool permit must be returned to University Parking.
- It is important to note that a daily parking permit may not be used in a carpool designated parking space.
- Carpool members decide how to share the driving, cost of permit, schedule, etc.
- Occasional Use permits expire in September and March, with no carryover of unused parking. An Occasional Use permit cannot be sold or given away and are not valid in spaces posted “Carpool Permit”
