ECE 544 Final Paper Requirements
FORMAT FOR SEMESTER FINAL LAB REPORT
Report Content
The intent of this report it to demonstrate your understanding of the fabrication processes used in the formation of the pressure sensor. The first element of the report content is a brief description of your of the theory behind the sensor's operation. Please briefly explain how the resistors, diaphragm, and metal layers combine to perform a working device. The second element is a suggested improvement to the process. This element will show your understanding of the fabrication of the device, as well as help you develop the design skills necessary fabrication of new devices. The improvement must be backed up by reference theory and show to be a possible improvement of the current fabrication technique. Multiple fabrication improvements may be written about if desired.
Report Format
General: Your lab report should be written in the form of a technical journal publication or conference proceeding. You'll be given a sample article to use as a guide. Use 12 point font and single space the text. The abstract and text sections (sections I - VI below) should be 5-10 pages in length (excluding References, Figures, Tables, and Appendix). Place Tables and Figures after the Reference section, as opposed to integrating them with your text section. Write in the 3rd person!!!!!
Use the following format:
Title (be descriptive and complete)
Authorship
Abstract (200 words or less)
I. Introduction (1 paragraph)
II. Overall Pressure Sensor Design Theory – How does it work? Be Brief.
III. Fabrication Overview – Diagram Process Steps and Describe each process
IV. Testing Results
V. Current Fabrication Theory (of step chosen to be improved)
VI. Suggested Improvement and Theory Behind Improvement (with at least 2 references)
VII. Conclusion and Recommendations
Acknowledgement
References
Figures and Tables
Appendix (if applicable)
Hints
Title - Use specific and informative titles with a high keyword content.
Authorship - Give author's name in as complete a form as possible (first name, initials, and surname). Give the complete mailing address of the author (e.g. Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY 40292).
Abstract - The abstract (80-200 words) should describe concisely and clearly the purpose of the research, the principal results, and the major conclusions. Remember that the abstract will be the most widely read portion of the paper and would be used by abstracting services.
Text - Write for the technical reader. It is not necessary to include information and details or techniques that should be common knowledge to the average technical reader.
General organization - Indicate the breakdown among and within sections with center heads and/or side heads. Keep all information pertinent to a particular section, and avoid repetition. Write in the 3rd person!!!!!!
Introduction - The introduction should state the purpose of the investigation and its relation to other work in the same field but should not include an extensive review of the literature. If the manuscript describes a new method, reasons should be given to indicate why it is preferable to older methods.
Experimental Results and/or Discussion Section - Use complete sentences (i.e., do not use an outline form). Be consistent in voice (3rd person) and tense (usually past). The results may be presented in tables or figures; however, many simple findings can be presented directly in the text with no need for tables or figures. The discussion should be concise and deal with the interpretation of the results. In most cases, combining results and discussion in a single section will give a clearer, more compact presentation.
Grade Basis
- 10% - Format and Neatness (Use IEEE journal as an example)
- 10% - Writing Skill/Clarity (Punctuation, sentence structure, grammar)
- 30% - Pressure Sensor Theory
- 25%- Fabrication Theory and Description
- 25%- Validity Fabrication Improvement – (References support improvement)
