Facilities

Our clinical facilities are located in the lower level of James Graham Brown Cancer Center. We have an accredited medical radiation oncology residency program, a medical dosimetry school, and an accredited medical physics residency program.  All equipment is supported on a Radiotherapy Network that uses ARIA for information management, as well as the patient management system currently in use.

The department engages in cutting edge patient care with treatment planning and delivery using state of the art equipment.  We have superior treatment expertise in Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), and Brachytherapy.  The department is also involved with TBI for bone marrow implants, TSE, radioactive iodine treatments, I-125 eye plaques, respiratory gating and motion management for radiosurgery, and numerous brachytherapy procedures utilizing our dedicated Bravos HDR suite.

Varian True Beam

The flagship of the world’s leading vendor of radiation oncology equipment, the TrueBeam is specially optimized for the treatment of lung cancer. It utilizes a 10MV flattening filter free beam capable of delivering 2400 MU/min. It delivers Rapid Arc treatments which may be gated to deliver dose at a certain point in the patient’s breathing cycle. This unique technology assures full delivery of dose to the target while sparing dose to surrounding tissue. This machine is equipped with an on-board imager that makes both x-ray images and CT images, assuring the patient position is perfect before the treatment begins. The Truebeam is one of two machines in our department designated to deliver stereotactic body radiation therapy. The Brown Cancer Center is the first in Kentucky to offer this treatment option.

Accuray TomoTherapy Hi-Art

A revolutionary machine and the first machine to offer the delivery of 6 MV Image Guided Radiation Therapy, the Brown Cancer Center was the first in Kentucky to offer 6 MV TomoTherapy treatments. It is still considered as the optimal choice for treatment of many head and neck patients.

Accuray CyberKnife

The 6 MV CyberKnife is a unique machine capable of the most precise stereotactic radiation delivery of any machine currently manufactured. It may be used to treat patients with intracranial disease as well as some head & neck, lung and prostate patients.

Phillips Brilliance CT

This imaging system is optimized with a large bore (opening) for the acquisition of imaging data for radiation oncology treatment planning. It accumulates 16 slices per rotation, and is capable of providing full 4 dimensional imaging so that the entire breathing cycle may be imaged for treatment planning of moving targets. Coupled with the Truebeam or Trilogy, lung patients may be treated with gated Rapid Arc, the highest quality and precision treatment delivery currently available.
