Resident Wellness
Mentorship: Each resident is assigned to an associate program director that follows his or her progress and works to overcome problems throughout residency (this includes preliminary residents). We meet with them the week of orientation, and get to know issues that might affect them. We follow up on those issues and inquire about "how they are doing" at semi annual meetings, and sometimes more often.
Retreats: We discuss financial planning at our second-year Shakertown retreat with UK, sponsored by the American College of Physicians. We also discuss planning and life balance at intern orientation and at intern retreat. We work on skills for conflict resolution and teaching at the intern retreat, and career preparation at the intern and the Shakertown retreat. These retreats also provide the opportunity for bonding among our trainees.
Input: We have an elected steering committee that brings training and wellness issues to the monthly meeting with Dr. Koch. In addition, we discuss adjustments with residents and utilize the student health center and counseling services often.
