Program Goals

 

The Family Medicine Residency Program at University of Louisville School of Medicine is committed to the following goals:

  • To train and develop outstanding physicians who have excellent clinical and communication skills.
  • To encourage personal growth and develop doctors with humanitarian and leadership qualities who are active in their communities.
  • To understand the diverse communities in which we work and practice, and develop the attitudes and skills necessary to deliver quality care to these populations.
  • To emphasize patient dignity, to enhance the patient-physician relationship, and to include patients as partners in their care.
  • To educate family physicians within a broad scope of practice enabling them to provide care throughout the life cycle.
  • To help physicians easily access and navigate electronic medical references for practice guidelines, for answers to clinical inquiries, and for the latest evidence-based medicine.
  • To educate family physicians in the proper use of consultants and to coordinate services for integrated patient care.
  • To fully integrate family physicians into multi-disciplinary health care teams.
  • To teach physicians how to practice medicine efficiently in preparation for future practice, including office management, reimbursement, use of electronic health record, and teamwork.
  • To teach learners how to become teachers, how to best educate their colleagues and patients, and the art of giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  • To prepare physicians to become lifelong learners.

We will consider graduates of U.S. and international medical schools for first year level positions (PGY-1) through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) if the individual has one of the following:

  1. Prior or anticipated graduation from a LCME accredited medical school.
  2. Prior or anticipated completion of a "fifth pathway" program.
  3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have not completed a “fifth pathway” program must have current, valid certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) at the time of application. Current students in such schools must have ECFMG certification to begin residency.

and

  1. International medical school graduates must have completed twelve months or more of clinical training (i.e. observership/externship involving patient contact) in an American or Canadian medical setting within the last two years.
  2. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, have permanent residency status in the United States or be eligible for a J-1 Visa.
  3. Applicants must have a passing score (on the first or second attempt) on USMLE-1 and both parts of USMLE-2 (Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Skills) or other recognized licensing examinations. Applicants with successful completion of USMLE-3 will be given preferential consideration.
  4. Applicants who have graduated from medical school within the last five years will be given preferential consideration.

The Family Medicine Residency Training program at the University of Louisville will only accept and review applications submitted through the ERAS system. If you are an international medical graduate, you may contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates for more information on the requirements for ERAS. If you are a U.S. medical graduate, please contact your school’s Student Affairs Office for assistance with the ERAS process.

December 1 is the deadline for applications. Applications received by November 1 will be given preferential consideration.

Invitations to interview may be offered after review of the above documents. No invitations will be issued unless the application is complete within the ERAS system. In keeping with the University of Louisville School of Medicine’s Mission Statement, the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine will give preference to applicants with ties to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
