Welcome to the University of Louisville Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine’s Residency Program. I am pleased to introduce you to our residency program. We are located in Louisville, Kentucky, the home of the Kentucky Derby, Muhammad Ali, and great college sports. Our program began in 1971 and our graduates have pursued practices in rural, suburban, and urban areas in many different practice types including academics, hospital medicine, community clinics, and fellowships. Our goal is to train excellent Family Physicians who will strive to provide superb care for their patients and become life-long learners.
The program’s training offers a unique blend of both academic and community settings. The program is located at Mary and Elizabeth Hospital with rotations occurring within the University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Mary and Elizabeth Hospital, Norton Children’s Hospital, and community offices. The program is structured as an 8-8-8 program accredited by the ACGME for a total of 24 residents in training annually. Residents see their continuity patients at our new practice location at Mary and Elizabeth Hospital.
Most rotations are one month in length with longitudinal requirements in maternity care, community medicine, and behavioral health. There are two fellowship programs in our department: Sports Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, both of which are ACGME accredited. Our didactics occur on Thursday afternoons at our residency suite located at Mary and Elizabeth Hospital. Grand Rounds are offered virtually on Friday mornings.
Our faculty is committed to providing high quality teaching; everyone is actively involved with resident training. We have an amazing residency division staff that is supportive and engaged in every aspect of this training process, including our TAGME-certified program coordinator, Tanya Keenan.
We are proud of our residency, but the most important part of the program are the residents themselves. Along with the faculty, they have been the ones responsible in creating such a great environment for residency training. Their dedication to and enthusiasm for continuing to better the residency program affords a superb education that will produce caring physicians who are dedicated to excellence. I hope you enjoy exploring our website. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to the opportunity to meet you in person!
