Dr. Charles Hubscher received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from McGill University in Montreal and his Master’s and Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Florida State University in Tallahassee. He held an Assistant Scientist position at University of Florida in Gainesville before coming to the University of Louisville as a faculty member in the Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology (ASNB) in 2001. Dr. Hubscher is a world-class researcher with funding from the National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense for his work on spinal cord injury. He currently serves as Vice Chair and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology, managing a program of over 30 Ph.D. and Master’s students. He is highly innovative and has worked tirelessly to develop a new curriculum, increase the rate and quality of graduating students, and recruit the best students both regionally and nationally. Dr. Hubscher has re-organized ASNB’s graduate committee, centralizing many of the different responsibilities into one highly integrated committee that oversees all aspects of graduate education from recruitment to oversight to graduation. He created a number of electronic forms to track student progress, including one for mentor evaluation. He greatly expanded recruitment efforts by developing a contemporary brochure and organizing recruitment booths at national meetings such as Society for Neuroscience. Dr. Hubscher also organized a peer-mentoring program called Neurobuddies that matches incoming students with more senior ones in the program. He implemented the use of the SIGS related PLAN program, and designed a 2 year and 5 year PLAN for both MS and PhD students, respectively. Most recently, he led ASNB’s efforts in the state regulated 10-year program review. Dr. Hubscher also mentors students at all levels and in multiple venues, including his lab, the classroom, and as Director of the ASNB graduate program. He has served as principal advisor for a number of pre- and post-doctoral students. Most notable is his ability to seek funding for his trainees, including two students who received a coveted NIH F31 pre-doctoral fellowship and one post-doctoral fellow who received a grant from the Paralyzed Veterans of America Research Foundation with special recognition as the highest ranked application in 2015. According to Dr. William Guido, Chair of ASNB, “Charles shows remarkable patience, dedication, and commitment to higher education and I would rank him nationally as a top-flight director and mentor”.
