LIAM Fall 2019

Leadership and Innovation in Academic Medicine

The 2019-2020 class of Leadership and Innovation in Academic Medicine (LIAM) will be the largest and most diverse group yet with 26 faculty members. This is the first year that we are including faculty from other HSC schools as well as Belknap Campus. We will welcome 15 faculty from the School of Medicine, 3 from the School of Nursing and 3 from the School of Dentistry. In addition, this year we have 5 faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences as part of a pilot program to introduce leadership training to Belknap Campus. We are eager to see how this diverse mix of faculty interacts with each other and the foundational leadership skills we introduce to them.

Administered by the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Office of Health Sciences Center Faculty Development, LIAM is an intensive, 11-month curriculum (September through July) that follows a developmental approach and begins with sessions to introduce leadership as a discipline and design thinking/innovation. These are followed by sessions that engage and equip the participant to lead self, lead others and, finally, to lead the organization. Each monthly in-person, three-hour session is preceded by two weeks of preparatory work and followed by two weeks of reflective work to apply what was experienced in the session. Using a design-thinking approach, LIAM participants are placed into multi-disciplinary teams that work on a project to develop an innovative solution to a real-world problem in education, research or clinical operations at the Health Sciences Center (HSC). The teams present their project recommendations at graduation to HSC and Belknap administrative leadership judges. The project solutions with the most promise are incorporated into our quality improvement efforts at the School of Medicine or University of Louisville Hospital. The five Belknap faculty will work on a team project related to a current critical issue in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The mission of the Office of HSC Faculty Development is to engage, equip and inspire faculty to achieve their very best in teaching and leadership to optimize the Health Sciences Center’s efforts to be a great place to learn, work and invest. The LIAM program will have graduated 62 early and mid-career faculty by July 2020 and is a critical component of how we deliver on that mission. Using the LIAM platform, we are creating an academy of leaders at the HSC by continuing to engage and inspire past LIAM graduates, including them in social engagements and keeping them informed of new leadership content we think they will find valuable. Any HSC faculty interested in applying for the LIAM class of 2020-21 should look for a notice from our office in the spring of 2020.
