Santa Barbara Dermatology Meeting 2025 - December 4 - December 7, 2025

Each year, nationally recognized leaders in medical, procedural, and aesthetic medicine convene in Santa Barbara to discuss and review the current state of knowledge in their respective dermatologic specialties. This program in medical dermatology features key clinical topics, including atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, cutaneous cancers, rosacea, psoriasis, and other important issues. Aesthetic medicine continues to be a growing specialty in the milieu of the aging American population and medical consumers’ ever-increasing desire to achieve the best possible quality of life at any age.

Dr. Heffernan is an internationally recognized complex medical dermatologist and clinical trialist. After serving as the  founding chair of Dermatology at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine he served as a Distinguished  Medical Fellow for Eli Lilly & Co. He is now the co-owner of San Luis Dermatology & Laser Clinic and he is the US  Dermatology Lead for Probity Medical Research. Dr. Heffernan has published over 80 peer reviewed articles and  textbook chapters. He has been the principle investigator for nearly 150 research studies and he has provided over 500  invited lectures around the globe.

Roberta is Founder and Owner of the Santa Barbara Skin Institute where she is in full time practice. Raised in California, she returned in 2008 after a decade as Director of Dermatologic Surgery/ Mohs Fellowship Training at Washington University School of Medicine. She currently serves as an Associate Clinical Professor at UC Irvine Department of Dermatology. Her private practice focuses on Mohs/Skin Cancer & Reconstructive Surgery, as well as Aesthetic Laser & Minimally-Invasive techniques. She is active in her specialty's key organizations and has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Mohs Surgery, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the International Transplant Skin Cancer Collaborative. She is Co-Founder and previous Chair of the WDS’ Women’s Dermatologic Surgery Committee. She has authored over 50 manuscripts, edited the first edition of the textbook 'Surgery of the Skin', and has given countless talks nationally and internationally mostly related to Mohs reconstruction and Facial Rejuvenation. Dr. Sengelmann is best known for her elegant surgical technique and attention to detail and her down to earth and playful disposition. She has 4 children and is married to Dr. Tamir Keshen, a Pediatric Surgeon.

Dr. Jackson is a Clinical Professor of Medicine (Dermatology) at the University of Louisville. Dr. Jackson is active in the dermatology residency program and spends time teaching dermatology residents and medical students. He is also involved in clinical investigational research, as well as in clinical practice with Forefront Dermatology. Dr. Jackson has authored many chapters and articles in peer reviewed publications and has lectured nationally and internationally on topics involving acne, lupus, neutrophilic disorders, psoriasis, eczema, systemic therapies for dermatologic diseases, drug reactions, and advanced dermatologic disorders. He sees patients primarily at the Louisville office, but also serves as an attending physician at the dermatology clinic at the University of Louisville.

Susan M. Swetter, MD, is Professor of Dermatology, Co-Director of the Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Program, and Physician Co-Leader of the Cutaneous Oncology Program at Stanford University Medical Center and Cancer Institute. She also serves as Assistant Chief of the Dermatology Service in the VA Palo Alto Health Care System.

Dr. Swetter received a BA with Distinction from the University of Virginia in 1986 and her MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1990. She completed an internship in internal medicine at University of California San Francisco in 1991, followed by dermatology residency and chief residency at Stanford. She joined the Stanford Dermatology faculty in 1994 and has directed the Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Programs at Stanford and VA Palo Alto Medical Centers since 1995.

Dr. Swetter’s research interests include primary and secondary melanoma prevention strategies and clinical studies of melanoma epidemiology, prognostic factors, and therapeutic prevention. She has published over 300 scholarly articles, reviews, and textbook chapters. Dr. Swetter has served on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Melanoma Panel since 2007 and was appointed as NCCN Melanoma Panel Chair in 2020. She also chaired the 2019 American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) melanoma clinical practice guidelines (CPG) update and serves on the current AAD Melanoma CPG Work Group.

Dr. Swetter co-founded (in 2002) and co-directs the Melanoma Prevention Working Group - a multi-center, interdisciplinary, NCTN/Intergroup collaboration dedicated to melanoma control. She founded and currently leads the Wipe Out Melanoma-California initiative to partner with the War on Melanoma™ public health efforts. Dr. Swetter established the Melanoma Community Registry of California and a statewide coalition of academic and health system partners to target high-risk populations for melanoma early detection through community engagement and novel technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Dr. Song is the director of clinical research and serves as the chief medical officer for Frontier Dermatology. His area of interest is in immune-mediated and inflammatory skin disorders. Dr. Song is an International Psoriasis Councilor and a medical advisory board member of the National Psoriasis Foundation. He serves on numerous editorial boards, including senior editor of the Journal of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.

David G. Brodland, M.D. - A native of Canton, South Dakota, received his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, graduating with honors. He received his resident training in Internal Medicine and Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

In 1990 he completed his Mohs College approved fellowship training in Micrographic Skin Cancer Surgery under the direction of Dr. John Zitelli in Pittsburgh. Prior to rejoining Dr. Zitelli in 1997, Dr. Brodland was on Faculty at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he was Associate Professor of Dermatology, Chair of Education, Director of Residency Program, and Co-director of Dermatologic Surgery and The Mayo Cutaneous Laser Center for 7 years. He continues his involvement in resident education as an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh with teaching appointments in Dermatology, Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology.  He is also the director of 2 ACGME approved fellowships in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Brodland has authored over 100 articles and chapters. He has performed over 10,000 laser and cosmetic procedures and more than 60,000 Mohs procedures. He is active in many local, state, and national dermatology organizations. He has held leadership positions in several dermatology organizations which include President of the American College of Mohs Surgery. Dr. Brodland has received many honors including the Frederic E. Mohs Lifetime Achievement Award, The Skin Cancer Foundation Fellowship Award, Appointment as Mayo Foundation Scholar, and the Teacher of the Year Award at the Mayo Clinic. He has been honored by the medical community with election to Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Top Doctors” for the past 15 years in a row.


Learning Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, the participants will be able to:
1. Discuss new approaches to therapy including pathway targeted therapy in the treatment of melanoma.
2. Assess the role of diagnostic tools and technology in diagnosis and detection of skin cancers.
3. Compare and contrast the efficacy and safety of agents, devices, and techniques currently available in aesthetic and procedural dermatology.
4. Integrate into daily practice evidence-based recommendations on new and emerging therapies for common dermatologic diseases.
5. Analyze treatment approaches for the pediatric patient with common as well as complex skin diseases.
6. Implement updated strategies for managing acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and psoriasis.
7. Recognize the factors that are important in selecting appropriate filler agents for treating different areas of the face and targeted planar depths.
8. Determine the appropriate nonsurgical techniques for facial rejuvenation based on an enhanced understanding of facial anatomy.
9. Explain the roles of currently available biologic agents in the treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and appropriately incorporate newer biologics into therapeutic practice as these become available.
10. Incorporate the recent research advances in understanding and treating pediatric dermatology issues such as atopic dermatitis and pediatric acne.
