ISPCOP 2016: Tipping the Scales in 2016: A New Look at Regional Anesthesia, Neuromuscular Blockade and Opioids in the Patient with Obesity - October 24, 2016

General anesthesia is comprised of anesthesia, analgesia and neuromuscular blockade. Consequently, the vast majority of obese patients will receive opioids and neuromuscular blockers intraoperatively. Both opioids and neuromuscular blockers decrease the ability of the obese patient to regain adequate respiration at the end of general anesthesia and increase the risk for postoperative pulmonary complications including postoperative respiratory failure in a patient population with already impaired respiration. The focus of this symposium is to show alternatives to routine general anesthesia for the morbidly obese patient, including regional anesthesia for bariatric surgery, successful reversal of neuromuscular blockade and opioid free anesthesia.
