On October 5, 2026, a lawsuit was filed challenging recent guidance from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) on Curricular Practical Training (CPT) eligibility. Read NAFSA’s public announcement.
Q. Can I be authorized to participate in CPT at this time?
A. Yes, CPT can be authorized if both of the following are true:
- Participation in CPT is required by all students in a specific academic program, regardless of citizenship.
- The proposed CPT employer has entered into a cooperative agreement with the University of Louisville, where it has been agreed that the employer will sponsor the school’s students for this specific training.
Q. Can I be authorized to participate in CPT as an elective?
A. No, CPT cannot be authorized for optional internships and other work opportunities that:
- Are part of the student curriculum and pursuant to an elective class with a formal work component.
- Related to student thesis topic and proposed research area but not mandatory for graduation.
Q. Will these criteria be the same for Spring 2027 CPT?
A. The University of Louisville is continuing to evaluate ways to ensure CPT experiences are clearly documented as part of a student's academic program. We strongly encourage students to work closely with their academic advisors and the International Center before accepting or beginning any CPT opportunity.
