Proposed Rule on OPT Fees

DHS has published a proposed rule introducing new fees for OPT participation. This proposal is not in effect. Public comments are due November 9, 2026. Read the proposal in the Federal Register.
 

Q. How much are the proposed fees?

A. Initial OPT applications will be $70,000 and all OPT extension applications will be $30,000.
 

Q. When will this rule be implemented.

A. No implementation date has been set for this rule. These fee increases are only a proposed rule and have not been implemented.
 

Q. I am graduating in December 2026.  How does this impact my OPT application.

A. It does not. At this time, the existing OPT regulations and application fees remain in effect.
 

Q. Where do I go for additional information?

A. The International Center is updating its website and FAQs to reflect these developments. We will continue to provide timely updates as more information becomes available. You may also email any questions you have to isss@louisville.edu.
