Bringing Philosophy to the Schools

With the support of a Gheens Community Engagement Grant, in 2023 the Department of Philosophy at UofL initiated the Annual Philosophy Slam. Working with philosophy classes and clubs in JCPC high schools, participating schools produce teams of students who prepare responses to pre-circulated prompts. At the Slam the teams present their philosophical responses, engage in lively conversation, and compete for a variety of awards. Held on the UofL campus on World Philosophy Day, the event hosts approximately 45 students plus teachers and family members. This talk will discuss the purpose, challenges, and goals of this ongoing collaboration with JCPS.
