Behavior-specific praise research in rural school districts: Lessons learned
Presenters:David James Royer – Special Education, Early Childhood, and Prevention Science, Jennifer A Hogg – Doctoral Student, Nicholas A Newton – Doctoral Student, Amber A Priddy – Doctoral Student
We share lessons learned by 3 special education doctoral students who worked with administrators and teachers in Bullitt County, Greenup County, and Hardin County, training teachers to increase their rate of behavior-specific praise in their classrooms to prevent challenging behavior and increase academic engaged time. One study took place in an elementary school with co-teachers, another in a high school with co-teachers, and a third in an automotive career technical education classroom. Social validity was high for all teachers and students despite varying degrees of effectiveness of the behavior-specific praise intervention.
