A&S students earn scholarships for travel abroad
Three undergraduates and an alumna of the College of Arts & Sciences are winners of international scholarships offered by the College of Arts and Sciences and the University Honors Program.
Senior Allyson Banks and sophomores Lance Gibson and Miranda Mason have earned University Honors’ Etscorn International Summer Research Awards. Alumna Rosslyn Steinmetz won the College of Arts and Sciences’ Mary Churchill Humphrey Scholarship.
Banks, a Louisville native and criminal justice major, will spend part of her summer in Amman, Jordan, studying U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and the Arabic language. She has complemented her education by working as an intern with Louisville Metro Police, including assignments related to homicide investigations.
Gibson, a Henderson native majoring in mathematics and English, will travel to Poland to teach and mentor at the University of Lodz. He will also attend a conference there and take an intensive language course as part of his linguistic research on the Polish language. He came to UofL with 40 advanced placement college credits, essentially “skipping” his freshman year.
Mason, who is from Corinth, Ky., and majoring in medicine and society, will travel to Athens to explore socialized health care in Greece and how that country’s difficult economic situation may have impacted public health. She will take part in the Atlantis Project , a fellowship for future medical professionals that helps them refine and prepare for a career in health.
Steinmetz, a 2013 graduate from Louisville with degrees in political science, Spanish and Latin American and Latino Studies, will use her award to complete a master’s degree in gender research at the London School of Economics and Political Science in London.
