What is the General Studies Program?

Have you always wanted to finish your degree? The Bachelor of Science in General Studies was designed with the needs of returning adult learners in mind, to give you maximum flexibility in your academic experience. The program is structured to allow you to combine wide-ranging general education requirements with coursework in one of six tracks of your choosing. Your College of Arts and Sciences advisor will ensure you receive as much credit as possible for courses already taken and work experience already gained.

General Studies (BS)

The Bachelor of Science in General Studies is intended to allow returning adult learners to complete a degree, either online or in-person. It is especially suited for those who left college with some credits and who need to build on those to gain a degree while continuing in the workforce.

Chart Your Own Path to Success

Through the BS in General Studies, students can pursue their personal and professional goals, choosing an interdisciplinary track from among the following: Communication and Creative Expression; Health and Human Studies; Ethics, Justice, and Society; Culture and Community; Global Studies; or choosing the Dual Concentration, combining two minors or certificates, one of which may be from a UofL unit outside the College of Arts and Sciences.

Academic Flexibility

Interdisciplinary tracks allow you to tailor your education to your interests and career goals. Choose a track from among the following:

Scholarships and Financial Aid Opportunities

The General Studies Program is deeply committed to supporting its students. In Fall 2024, UofL launched the "Comeback Cards" program which allows former students who haven't been to school for at least two years to be eligible for some financial support. Advisors can help you find the financial aid opportunities relevant to you.

Personalized Academic Advising

Everyone brings a different set of experiences and existing credits to the Program. A dedicated advisor will work with you to ensure that all possible credit is given for what you already have and that maximum benefit is gained from the courses you choose. One-on-one guidance aims to make sure the program helps you towards your personal and professional goals.
