Senior Thesis

Arts and Sciences students may complete a Senior Thesis in their final year of undergraduate studies. Completing a Senior Thesis is an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to gain research experience, culminating in the writing and publication of original academic scholarship. For students interested in research, or going to graduate or professional school, a Senior Thesis is invaluable experience in preparation for their career. Additionally, completion of a thesis combined with at least a 3.5 GPA enables students to graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences with Distinction.

Eligibility

To submit a proposal for a Senior Thesis in the College of Arts & Sciences, you must have earned at least 90 credit hours, with a cumulative overall GPA of 3.5 (or higher).

Senior thesis projects are meant for completion over the course of the final year of students' undergraduate studies, whether that is a fourth year, third year if graduating early, etc. Thesis timelines can accommodate summer and December graduations.

Once completing the thesis process, if you have maintained a final cumulative overall GPA of 3.5 or higher, you will graduate from the College of Arts & Sciences with Highest Distinction.

Benefits of Completion

Pursuing a Senior Thesis will allow you to conduct an independent undergraduate research project about a subject of particular interest to you. With the help of a supervising faculty mentor, this process can lead to a number of benefits:

  • Eligibility for graduating With Highest Distinction from the College of Arts & Sciences
  • One-to-one interactions with faculty mentors
  • Excellent preparation for graduate and professional schools (research skills, writing skills, oral defense process)
  • Excellent preparation for careers in research
  • Opportunity to publish your finished work in ThinkIR to contribute to the body of work in your topic field
  • Present your original findings at conferences
  • Strengthen graduate/professional school application or portfolio
  • Provide an excellent writing sample for future employers
  • For students in the University Honors Program, it can contribute to University Honors Scholars

Library Resources

When you are working on a Senior Thesis, be sure to take advantage of the services offered by the reference librarians in Ekstrom Library. Students can make an individual research appointment with a librarian to identify research materials.

The University Writing Center offers composition specialists who are trained to assist writers with help in argument and structure, as well as with editing and documentation.

You may request an assignment to a closed carrel in the Ekstrom Library during the semester(s) in which you are completing your research. Reach out to the A&S; Senior Thesis Committee AS_SRTH@louisville.edu about carrel availability.

Archived Senior Theses

The University Honors Program has collaborated with Archives and Special Collections to create an online, searchable repository for A&S; Senior Honors Theses at the following site: http://ir.library.louisville.edu/honors.
