Beckerson is a Biology Ph.D. student studying cellular, molecular and developmental biology. His research focuses on protein interactions between pathogen/host co-evolution in emergent disease and host shifts. Biology senior, Katie Arstingstall, studies tropical ecology in Panama. She spent the summer researching thermal adhesion of canopy ants, or how well different species of canopy ants can stick to a vertical surface at a range of temperatures, on Barro Colorado Island.

Repertory Company sparks 40-plus years of imagination
The Theatre Arts department is celebrating the Repertory Company’s 40 years of success and raising funds to support the program with an event from 6-8 p.m. June 18, at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. Each year, a troupe of graduate students from University of Louisville’s Theatre Arts Department travels to dozens of area schools and performs plays from their repertory.

Arts & Sciences has banner year for prestigious scholars
Twenty-three students and alumni from the University of Louisville – 16 from the College of Arts & Sciences – earned some of the world’s most prestigious scholarships in 2016. The scholars will head to destinations throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
A&S junior Hannah Wilson earns Kentucky’s only Truman Scholar
College of Arts & Sciences junior Hannah Wilson (Political Science, Women’s & Gender Studies, and Philosophy) has earned a Truman Scholarship, a prominent award given to just 54 U.S. college students this year and valued at $30,000. She is Kentucky’s only 2016 Truman Scholar.

Evan Gora, a Ph.D. Biology student, works with tropical ecology Prof. Steve Yanoviak performing research in the Panamanian rainforest. Gora recently received both a National Geographic Young Explorer grant and a highly competitive Fellowship from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.
Nationally ranked Quiz Bowl team earns number one spot in ACC
With a higher sectional qualifying score than Yale, Harvard, Columbia and MIT, the College of Arts & Sciences led Quiz Bowl team finished the 2016 Intercollegiate Championship Tournament with the highest score in its history – 14th place among the top 32 teams in the United States beating Brown University, Illinois, and Northwestern. The Division I team also was the highest scoring team in the ACC and finished ahead of fellow ACC members Duke and Northwestern.
Fall 2015 BFA Thesis Exhibition
The Hite Art Institute is pleased to announce the opening of the fall 2015 BFA Thesis Exhibitions at Schneider Hall Galleries. The exhibition will display artwork in a variety of mediums from those students graduating with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Hite Art Institute.

Raise the Roof: First student-funded Habitat for Humanity house built in Louisville
The UofL chapter of Habitat for Humanity nailed down its most significant accomplishment to date. The first student-funded Habitat for Humanity house was built in Louisville during Raise the Roof weekend Sept. 17 through 19, 2015.

A&S Students Earn Prestigious Awards
Some of the most prominent awards in academia will go to 16 University of Louisville students and alumni. Of those 16 award winners, 14 are future graduates and alumni from the College of Arts & Sciences – including six Fulbrights, two Critical Language Scholars, one Truman Scholar and one English-Speaking Union Scholar.
