When to Apply
Applications can be submitted the first week in May during our annual open elective enrollment. After May, you can apply thirty days in advance of your requested elective date to allow for processing and travel arrangements. Applications for extended clinical electives upon arrival will not be processed.
How to Apply
Our application process for Domestic students is processed online using VSAS (Visiting Student Application Service) via the AAMC website. All Domestic applications using VSAS should process their application containing the following required documents:
- University of Louisville Immunization (only when approved for a rotation)
- Updated CV
Verification of HIPAA and OSHA training, BLS certification, and malpractice coverage at $1 million per occurrence and $3 million aggregate should be provided by your medical school during their verification process. The University of Louisville School of Medicine does participate in the Universal Clinical Training Agreement for Visiting Students and Externships.

You must be in your final year of medical school when you arrive for your elective. Electives are four-weeks in duration unless otherwise approved by the Office of Medical Student Affairs. Applications are accepted year-round from LCME accredited institutions. Osteopathic applications are accepted. Step 1 scores are not required however some Departments may require a COMLEX score. Pediatrics requires a COMLEX score equal to or greater than 500 plus a personal statement.
