SOM Student Diversity Award

This prestigious award, established in 2003, is presented annually to recognize the extraordinary contributions SOM students make to medical education and the healthcare of racial and ethnic populations that are historically underrepresented in medicine and/or science research. The ultimate goal is to honor individuals who demonstrate personal commitment and make significant, positive contributions towards addressing the educational, societal, and/or healthcare needs of underrepresented groups by way of teaching, research, and/or service.  The honor includes a monetary award of $500 and an engraved plaque. 

The Selection Process

The following criteria should guide our institution’s nomination and selection process.

  • Nominee must be graduating MD, PhD, or Masters Student with all requirements for graduation completed at the time of spring graduation.
  • Nominee must have demonstrated a sincere dedication to eliminating health disparities.
  • Nominee must consistently show a deep-seated commitment to the education of a diverse health professions workforce to meet the needs of society.
  • Nominee must have displayed genuine concern and compassion while working with younger students in efforts to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the medical profession.
  • Nominee must have clearly exemplified leadership skills, as evidenced by initiating innovative projects such as school or community activities, participating in high-profile meetings and committees, or taking an active role in campus or community organizations.
  • Nominee must consistently serve as a role model, illustrating professional behavior by example.

The Nomination Process

Any U of L School of Medicine faculty, staff, or student in good standing may submit nominations. Nominations must include the following:

  • Nomination Form
    • Including a statement of evidence in justification of the nomination; not to exceed 500 words, prepared by person submitting the nomination
  • Nominee’s resume/curriculum vitae, (sign-in with your UofL email credentials to upload file)
  • One Recommendation Form completed by a person other than the Nominator with supporting statements of recommendation
