Research Committee

Term: The term of office is three years.  Members may not serve on other standing committees (excluding Faculty Forum).  Members of these committees who have served two full consecutive terms must wait an additional two full terms before being eligible to serve again.

Membership: This committee consists of eight elected executive faculty.  The Director/Associate Dean for Research may serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member.  Membership is equally divided between preclinical and clinical departments, with no department having more than one representative.  The committee annually elects its own chair from among its members.

Responsibilities:

The Committee advises the Dean and the Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation as requested concerning research policies and the allocation of research resources.

  1. Grant reviews: The grant programs for which the committee reviews applications include, but are not limited to, the School of Medicine Research Grants (Basic, Bridge, and Collaborative grants) and the Jewish Heritage Fund Grants. The Committee uses an NIH study section format to review grant applications at each of three meetings. Experience with participation on an NIH study section provides the best preparation for serving on the committee. Experience with grant submissions/reviews, as a reviewer of applications to other federal programs or of protocols for IBC, IRB or IACUC are the next best level of preparation. Training for faculty with a commitment to learn the process and be part of the committee is available and these individuals are encouraged to apply.
  2. Other duties:
    1. The committee may review nominations for outstanding faculty research awards.
    2. The committee may review abstracts for Research Louisville!
    3. The committee may review other applications at the request of the Dean or Vice President for Research and Innovation.

Meeting Dates: The Research Committee meets quarterly with the dates and times set according to member availability.  Time commitment:  Meetings generally last 2 hours.
