The fellowship in Oculofacial Plastic and Orbital Surgery, approved by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (A) and ACGME-accredited, is a combined program between the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Louisville and St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. It is a two year program accepting one new fellow each year. The fellowship is designed to provide advanced education and researching training in the clinical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of diseases processes, orbital and periorbital trauma, as well as aesthetic and reconstructive surgery specializing in the face, orbits, eyelids and lacrimal system.

The Program
Fellows spend time during their first year of training at the University of Louisville and the acclaimed Kentucky Lions Eye Center, as well as in the private practices of the attending physicians. The second year is spent in Indianapolis, Indiana at St. Vincent Hospital where Dr. Harold Lee serves as the site director and ASOPRS fellowship director. Fellows will perform or assist faculty in approximately 800 surgical procedures per year, and will have significant hospital and clinical responsibilities with appropriate faculty supervision. In addition, fellows will actively participate in teaching activities for ophthalmology residents and will direct hands-on anatomy courses for ophthalmology residents and medical students.

Fellows work closely with faculty, receiving the full benefit of their attention, knowledge and expertise. Fellows also benefit from the close, collaborative relationship of the faculty as a whole, which encourages access to experts in all aspects of ophthalmology.

William R. Nunery, MD serves as the fellowship director for Louisville. He completed medical school at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, ophthalmology residency at Indiana University, and oculofacial plastic and orbital surgery fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Nunery is a member and past President of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has over 35 years of surgical experience and specializes in surgical intervention for orbitofacial trauma, orbit tumors, eyelid malposition and reconstruction, development and reconstruction of the anophthalmic socket, ophthalmic Graves’ disease, and oculofacial cosmetic and rejuvenation procedures. Also on the faculty in Louisville are Drs. Christopher Compton and Jeremy Clark.

H.B. Harold Lee, MD serves as the site director and program director for the second year of training based in Indianapolis. Dr. Lee completed medical school at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine, ophthalmology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and oculofacial plastic and orbital surgery fellowship training with Dr. Nunery in Indianapolis. Dr. Lee is a member of ASOPRS and the Thesis Committee. He has 8 years of surgical experience and specializes in surgical repair of orbitofacial trauma, orbit tumors, eyelid malposition and reconstruction. Through St. Vincent Hospital, fellows will take call at this Level 1 Trauma Center, and will interact with multiple clinical faculty in a variety of specialties involved in facial and periorbital trauma repair.

Scholarly Activities, Research & LabsFellows participate in and present at weekly Ophthalmology Grand Rounds, as well as national meetings of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Fellows are expected to actively write and publish their own research.

Cadaver labs and animal research labs are accessible for use by the fellow. There are also basic slides labs and a number of specialty labs available for projects as they choose

Careers After Fellowship
Upon completion of the program, fellows go on to prestigious jobs in academic medicine, research and private practice. Past fellows have found success in positions at Indiana University, University of California-Irvine, Temple University, University of Chicago, University of Kansas, University of Oregon, University of Kentucky, University of Tennessee-Memphis and the University of Louisville, among others.
