Interim Chair, University of Louisville Dept. of Neurology
Director, University of Louisville Neurology Residency Program
Welcome to the Department of Neurology at the University of Louisville School Of Medicine, the region’s first choice in care of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system. As Chair I’d like to share our mission and offerings.
Our mission: to provide comprehensive patient-centered clinical care to adults with a broad range of neurological conditions; to teach and mentor medical students, residents, physicians, and nurses; to improve the field of knowledge and practice through research and innovation; and to serve the healthcare needs of the citizens of communities throughout this region of the United States. The expertise of our faculty offers impressive teaching and research opportunities to residents in training. Medical students, residents and fellows are given unlimited opportunity to work closely with expert clinicians committed to patient care and teaching. This effort is complemented by other faculty members who are dedicated to the advancement of medical science through clinical and basic science research. Our faculty offer residents opportunities to participate in developing new approaches to diagnosis and therapy.
Neurology Education: is also an integral part of the curriculum of the School of Medicine. Medical students complete a required clerkship in neurology during their third year. Residents actively participate in teaching medical students via clinical rounds and conferences.
.
Inpatient Services: The University of Louisville Hospital is separated into a Stroke Service and a General Neurology service. The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit is exclusively dedicated to critically ill neurology and neurological surgery patients. The University Hospital is the first Joint Commission certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in the Kentucky. A dedicated stroke unit offers the opportunity to evaluate and manage complex stroke patients. .
An active neurology service at Jewish Hospital gives residents the opportunity to experience a consultative neurohospitalist model of inpatient practice. A Level IV Epilepsy Program provides the opportunity to study complex epilepsy patients with continuous video and EEG monitoring at Jewish Hospital.
Residents also rotate at Norton Children’s Hospital to gain experience caring for children hospitalized with neurological conditions.
Outpatient Services: Daily outpatient clinics are conducted at the Pediatric Neurology and Adult Neurology practices. In addition to general adult and pediatric neurology clinics, there are special clinics for vascular neurology (stroke), Alzheimer's disease and memory disorders, epilepsy, headache, movement disorders, neuro-oncology, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disorders, and others.
Values: We value excellence and compassionate care in a collaborative delivery model. The four pillars of the department: service, education, research, and community engagement serve as our foundation.
