Several members of the University of Louisville Department of Medicine had good showings in the recent 2015 Research!Louisville competitions, held in conjunction with the event's 20th annual showcase of health/life sciences research conducted at UofL.
A panel of university faculty judges selected the winners of this year's contest from hundreds of entries in the categories of professional/clinical students, basic science grad students, postgraduates and faculty.
Here's a look at finished at or near the top in their respective categories:
Master's Basic Science Graduate Student Award
- 1st place TIE: Cierra Sharp - Developing a more clinically relevant mouse model of cisplatininduced nephrotoxicity. Mentors: Leah Siskind, Ph.D., & Levi Beverly, Ph.D.
- 1st place TIE: John Zhao - Targeted Inhibition of Histone Decetylase 1 Promotes the Activation of a Cardiomyogenic Genetic Program in Human Cardiac-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells. Mentor: Joseph Moore IV, Ph.D.
Doctoral Basic Science Graduate Student Award
- 2nd place TIE: Erik Korte - Loss Of Glomerular Cell ABIN1 Polyubiquitin Binding Results In Enhanced Pro-Inflammatory Signalling And Kidney Injury. Mentor: David Powell, Ph.D.
Norton Healthcare Medical Student Award
- 2nd place: Jordan Noe - Altered bioenergetics in alternative activation of MIF-deficient macrophages. Mentor: Robert Mitchell, Ph.D.
Research Staff Award
- Winner: Parag Shah - UBQLN1 mediated Integrin/Src/FAK signaling as a lung cancer drug target. Mentor: Levi Beverly, Ph.D.
School of Medicine Clinical Research Fellow Award
- Winner: Chirag Patel - Clinical Correspondence of S100 Levels on Full Thickness Gastric Biopsy. Mentor: Thomas Abell, M.D.
NCI Cancer Education Program Norbert J. Burzynski Award Undergraduate Student Category
- 3rd place: Alexander Sobolev - pH Specific Dual Targeting of Colloidal Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Pancreatic Adenocarcinomas. Mentor: Lacey McNally, Ph.D.
Ruth Greenberg Award for Excellence in Medical Education Research
- 2nd place TIE: Nancy Kubiak, M.D. - An Effective Quality Improvement Curriculum Implemented by a Single Faculty Preceptor.
Louisville Chapter-Women in Medicine and Science
- 2nd place: T'shura Ali - Clinical outcomes of male vs. female patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Mentor: Forest Arnold, D.O., M.Sc.
