Per federal regulations, students may only receive Title IV federal and state financial aid once for repeating previously passed coursework. To maintain Title IV federal and state financial aid eligibility, students must also continue to meet the University of Louisville’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards.
It’s important to understand that previous coursework not funded by Title IV federal and state financial aid is excluded when determining enrollment status under the federal repeated coursework rule.
Important things to understand:
- A student who earns a grade of “D” or better may only receive federal or state aid for one additional attempt of that course.
- If a student repeats a previously passed course a second time (i.e., third total attempt), they will not be eligible for federal or state aid for that course (or for subsequent attempts), and their financial aid package may be adjusted.
- The need to repeat a course to meet major/program GPA requirements or to improve a personal grade does not change aid eligibility.
Examples of Repeat Coursework and Aid Eligibility based on the assumption that Title IV federal and state student financial aid was received for the course (or course was counted when determining student’s Title IV enrollment status for federal and state student financial aid)
Scenario | Grade – First Attempt | Grade – Second Attempt | Eligible for Aid on Third Attempt? |
---|---|---|---|
Scenario 1 | F | F | ✅ Yes |
Scenario 2 | F | D | ✅ Yes |
Scenario 3 | W | F | ✅ Yes |
Scenario 4 | D | F | ❌ No |
Scenario 5 | D | C | ❌ No |
Scenario 6 | D | W | ❌ No |
Note: The decision to repeat a course should be made in consultation with your academic advisor. Be sure to also review the University’s academic repeat policy in the University Catalog.
