The University of Louisville Multicultural Teacher Recruitment Program (MTRP) hosted two events that not only celebrated its rich history but paved the way for an even brighter future.

Honoring Legacy: MTRP Alumni and Friends Reunion

On August 3, 2023, MTRP proudly celebrated 38 years of removing barriers, cultivating inclusive excellence, and addressing the shortage of minority teachers in the classroom. The “Heart of an Educator” event was an evening of camaraderie that honored the program’s legacy.

Throughout the evening several speakers led the program, including Emmy award-winning broadcaster, Jean West. Dr. Rita Greer, MTRP program developer, offered insights into the program’s history and Dr. Aimee Green-Webb, offered an alumni perspective.

Former and current MTRP leadership believe in the power of telling the history of the program and the impact it has had.

“MTRP has had such an impact on so many overtime throughout our community,” said Carrye Jones, MTRP advisory board member. “MTRP is integral to recruit and retain teachers of color.”

MTRP was originally established under the name Minority Teacher Recruitment Project in 1985.

The event was not only a tribute to the past but also a way to reconnect with the attendees whose unwavering support has made a lasting impact on the community.

A Bright Future: Welcoming the Next Generation of Educators

Looking toward the future, MTRP held an event centered on community and growth. On August 24, 2023, the MTRP team welcomed students back to campus at the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium, nestled in the heart of the UofL’s Belknap Campus.

“This event was meant to provide a space for our students, new and returning, to build community after the summer break,” said MTRP Director, Whitney Taylor.

Around 30 students enjoyed food, fun, giveaways, and community as they settled into their first week of classes at the University of Louisville.

“(I felt Impacted by) the presence of others who are interested in becoming future educators like me,” said Jazmín Martínez Díaz, an incoming freshman and MTRP scholarship recipient. “The staff were all amazing to talk to and very welcoming to new members like me! I am excited for future events and many other opportunities that I can attend with MTRP.”

Another incoming student, Kinley Hazard, spoke highly of the support MTRP staff provided during the event. “Throughout the event, they (MTRP Staff) verbally expressed how grateful they were that we were there and urged us to ask any questions that came to mind. Providing us with many resources such as scholarships and professional opportunities,” said Hazard. “They truly care for the success of each and every student who comes their way and made the effort to make sure everyone felt welcomed."

“These two events were the perfect way to kick off my second year as Director of MTRP,” said Taylor. “I’m looking forward to continuing this great work with our former coordinators, alumni, and our upcoming students. The future looks bright.”
