In 1939, the University of Louisville Cheer program was founded and today is recognized nationally and internationally as the gold standard after winning multiple national championships. The cheer team’s motto is “To be a Louisville cheerleader is to reach the top of the sport.” Exactly 50 years later in 1989, Aasta Martin Wolfe began her collegiate career as a UofL student and cheerleader under Head Coach Sheryl Travis Zimmerman but unfortunately, her cheer career ended abruptly. Aasta experienced a serious patella tendon injury and was placed in an immobilizer. After completing physical therapy, she began a different journey; that of a working professional and mother.

In 1993 and 1995 her family grew with the birth of her daughter and son. In addition to being a busy young parent, she also worked and completed various college courses when possible, however, the timing for finishing her college degree was off, until now. Aasta returned to UofL in the summer of 2022 as an “empty-nester” with the goal of reaching the top of her professional career. “I chose to finish my college education, where I started at the University of Louisville, to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Leadership (HCL). The HCL program will carry me forward in my Public Health career and, most importantly, with my life by removing the barrier of incompletion. I want to lead by example, not just by my words. I returned to college to fulfill a promise to myself which is to be the best person I could be by completing my growth not only mentally but spiritually at well. To keep that promise, I must finish my degree.”

She has found the B.S. in Healthcare Leadership program extremely welcoming with a support system in place to create an environment of success. “I enjoy the interactions with my Success Team, instructors, and classmates. I enjoy discussing the class content and future application of what I am learning plus I’m building relationships that will last a lifetime. Furthermore, the HCL program coursework has already broadened my understanding and capabilities in my current responsibilities with my employer.”

Aasta is in her second semester of the fully online UofL B.S. Healthcare Leadership degree program while working full-time for the Georgia Department of Public Health District 4 Emergency Preparedness. She is the Medical Reservice Corps of West Georgia Volunteer Coordinator and Emergency Preparedness Logistics Assistant.

Aasta Martin Wolfe has returned to where it all began and is reaching her goal of completion. “I have spent most of my educational experience and career being a cheerleader for others, it’s time for me to be a cheerleader for myself.”
