Art Education Content Pre-requisites

Students interested in art education teacher certification (grades P-12) first complete a bachelor's of fine arts degree with a major in studio arts prior to entering the teacher certification program at the graduate level. Students must apply and be accepted into the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program in order to complete teacher certification. Please review the admissions packet of general admission requirements for the MAT program. It is highly recommended that students who did not complete a BFA meet with Barbara Hanger for a complete content evaluation prior to application. Barbara Hanger can be reached at (502) 852-0879 or blhang01@louisville.edu.

Those students who do not complete a major in this content area must complete prerequisite courses as indicated below to be eligible for application to the program. These prerequisite courses may be taken in post-baccalaureate status through the University of Louisville or through another accredited institution upon approval of an Education Advisor. An overall 2.50 grade point average is required for certification. Applicants who have remaining prerequisite, content courses should have an official transcript evaluation prior to enrolling in those courses.
