Did You Know?

The College of Arts & Sciences’ Urban Studies Institute, an applied social policy and economic research center serving Kentucky, houses five research centers: the Kentucky State Data Center, Kentucky Population Research Center, Center for Environmental Policy and Management, Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development, and Center for Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods.

American Culture and Automobile Design with Bill Porter
Bill Porter, a legend in American automobile design, will give a presentation and Q&A on the interplay between automobile design and culture Wednesday, July 22 at the Henry Clay. Reception is at 5:30pm followed by the presentation at 6:30pm. Tickets are $25, and include appetizers and a cash bar.

Red Out: UofL Night at Shakespeare in the Park
Please join the College of Arts and Sciences, the UofL Alumni Association, and Kentucky Shakespeare for UofL Night on July 23. UofL Professor Emerita Rinda Frye will discuss Shakespeare’s "Magical Metaphysical Theatre" at 7:15 p.m. followed by The Tempest at 8 p.m. Dessert trucks and a cash bar will be on site. Prof. Ziegler presents at Poland conference
Prof. Charles Ziegler (Political Science) organized and chaired a panel, and presented a paper on US-China competition in the Asia Pacific, at the Interdisciplinary Approaches to Security in a Changing World conference, Krakow, Poland, on June 19.

Ph.D. student Alvarez receives NCTE award
Sara Alvarez, Ph.D. student in Rhetoric and Composition, has received the National Council of Teachers of English’s Early Career Educator of Color Leadership Award. As part of the award she will receive a plaque presented at the 2015 annual convention and will present at the 2016 annual convention.

New chemistry instrument vastly expands research capabilities (A&S) – On the Center for Regulatory, Environmental and Analytical Metabolomics’ newest instrument, funded by the NIH and UofL’s EVPRI office, and used by researchers across departments and schools at UofL as well as those from other universities to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level.
