CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES

February 2, 1998

Members present: S. Davis, J. Hart, S. Maloney, M. Rohmann, R. Sahoo, E. Segal (Chair), M. Stenger, R. Taylor

Guests: M. Hawkesworth, J. Dietrich

Professor Segal called the meeting to order at 9:30.

The minutes of the meeting of January 26 were approved as
distributed.

The committee approved a prerequisite change for POLS 392.

Professor Hawkesworth and the committee discussed the Political
Science Department's reasons for recommending its policy on credit
for the Advanced Placement examination. Following considerable
discussion, the committee approved the department's proposal,
although it would have favored granting credit for the examination
without attaching conditions to it. Effective Fall 1998, students
entering UofL who have earned a score of 4 or higher on the AP
exams in either American Politics or Comparative Politics and who
successfully complete POLS 299: Honors Introduction to Political
Science will be awarded 3 credit hours in Political Science (in
addition to the credit earned for POLS 299). The hours may count
as elective credit toward a major in political science. Students
must complete POLS 299 to receive credit for the AP examination.

The committee discussed course proposals from the Theatre Arts
Department and the Justice Administration Department, but deferred
action until representatives of the departments could be present to
answer questions.

The committee discussed several issues relating to the assigning of
incompletes.

The meeting adjourned at 10:50.
