Minutes
December 6, 2013

Members present:  H. Gutierrez, J. Li, R. Roebuck (Chair), R. Taylor, M. Rohmann,  C. Tillquist, W. Yoder, C. Zhang

Members absent:   M. Church, J. Kettle (A&S Student Council)

Guests:  R. Buchanan (LALS), S. Jarosi (FA), G. Leichty (COMM)

The committee set Mondays, 11:00-12:30, as its meeting time for Spring 2014.

LALS 400:  LALS Internship was approved for WR and CUE credit.   It will replace LALS 490 as the program’s CUE course, and 490 will be deleted from the inventory.  As this change will result in 9 rather than 12 hours being required in specific LALS courses (300, 311, 400), the LALS electives at the 300 level or above will be increased from 6 to 9.

COMM 438:  Health Communication Campaign Planning was approved for CUE designation.

COMM 445:  Strategic Communications Campaigns was approved for CUE designation.

Professor Leichty told the committee that additional COMM courses will be proposed for CUE designation, as it is not the department’s intent that 438 and 445 become requirements for all BA degrees.

The committee discussed CUE designation for  ARTH 550:  Undergraduate Capstone Seminar with Professor Jarosi.  It was agreed that the course should remain a 3-credit hour course, rather than be changed to a 1-credit hour course.  The course was approved for CUE designation, contingent upon receipt of an expanded syllabus which included a grading scale.

Revised placement test guidelines for Spanish were approved.  (The revised placement test guidelines do not affect IB or AP credit.) The new guidelines are:

Score  below 295—placement in SPAN 121 or 141
Score between 295-369—placement in SPAN 123
Score between 370-439—placement in SPAN 201
Score between 440-650—placement in SPAN 305 or 310
Score above 650—placement in consultation with Spanish advisor

Changes were approved to the requirements for the major and minor in Spanish.

The revised requirement for the major are SPAN 201, 202, 305, 310, 311 or 324, 321, 400, 490, and 524 (27 hours);  SPAN 401, 402, 403, or 404 (select one for 3 hours);  and 6 hours of electives in Spanish at the 300 level or above.  Total hours required in Spanish courses remain 36

The revised requirements for the minor are SPAN 201, 202, 305, 310, 311, and 321 (18 hours); and 3 hours of electives in Spanish at the 300 or 500 level.  The minor no longer includes the requirement of 3 hours from SPAN 401, 402, 403 or 404.  Total hours required for the minor in Spanish remain 21.
