Curriculum Committee Minutes October 6, 2010

College of Arts and Sciences

The minutes of the meeting of September 22 were  approved , with the addition of the statement that students must be readmitted to the College of Arts and Sciences in order to apply hours earned during a period of suspension to an A&S degree.

The committee approved the  proposal for a minor in Film and Digital Media Studies.  Two additions were recommended to the proposal:  (1) a restriction that no more than six (6) hours applied to the student’s major  requirements may also be used toward the minor, and (2) that no more than six (6) of the elective hours in the minor may be taken in any one department.

A student petition for a waiver of the expanded grade point average for consideration for College Honors was denied.

The following actions were approved, effective with the 2011-2012 catalog year.

Changes were approved to the admission requirements for the M.A. in Sociology.  The minimum GRE combined verbal/quantitative score was raised from 900 and 1000 and an interview was added to the requirements.  These changes  will also apply to students seeking admission to the accelerated M.A.

Changes to the Ph.D. in Applied Sociology were approved:

  1. he current requirement of an “outside methods” course was deleted and replaced by the statement that “Students may take up to six hours of course work outside the department with the prior approval of the Graduate Coordinator.”
  2. Addition of the statement  “Students  are permitted to take up to three hours at the 500-level with the prior approval of the Graduate Coordinator.”
  3. An interview was added as one of the admission requirements for  the  doctoral program.

 

The cross-listing of PAS 327/ POLS 327:  Politics of the Black Community was discontinued at the joint request of the departments.  A new course POLS 327:  African American Politics was approved, with credit recommended  for CD 1 General Education.  The request for CD credit will be forwarded to the General Education Course Committee.   Following the removal of the cross-list, credit may be earned for both courses.

  • SOC/WGST 460: Gender in the Middle East (new course) was approved.
  • SOC/WGST 458:  Women:  International Perspective was returned to the department for additional information.
  • PSYC 321:  Introduction to the Psychology of Learning (description change and addition of recitation approved; credit hours remain the same))
  • PSYC 550:  Exercise Psychology was renumbered to PSYC 450.
  • PSYC 602:  Research in Perception and  Sensory  Psychology  (title and credit hour change approved) 
  • PSYC 613:  Research Methods in Vision and Hearing Science (new course) and
  • PSYC 635:  Sensory Neuroscience (new course) were returned to the department for additional information.
