College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee Minutes
October 16, 2009


Members present:  B. Bradley (Chair), J. Burnet, G. Leichty, K. Libe (A&S Student Council), A. Miller, M. Rohmann, R. Taylor, B. Williams

Members absent:  B. Willey

Guests:  J. Carew (International Center), R. Fell (Biology)

The minutes of the meeting of September 25 were approved as distributed.

The following requirements were accepted for declaration of a major in Biology: 
Completion of BIOL 240, 242, and 244 (or equivalent courses taken at another institution) with a grade of “C” or better;
Completion of MATH 111 (or an equivalent course) with a grade of “C” or better OR placement into a mathematics course above the level of MATH 111 on the basis of either the University mathematics placement examination or ACT/SAT score; and
An overall grade point average of at least 2.0.

HIST 317:  African American Experience in Wartime was approved for GenEd CD1 designation and will be forwarded to the General Education Course Committee for review.

GEN 111:  Global Classroom, to be offered by the staff of the International Center,  was approved as a 1- credit hour course graded P/F to be used by students participating in semester- or year long study abroad programs.

An interdisciplinary minor in Global Public Health was approved.  The rubric GPH will be created for an internship (401) and an independent research (402) course.  Other courses in the minor are drawn from the existing curriculum.

A minor in LGTBQ Studies, housed in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, was approved.  The following new courses were also approved:

  • WGST 301:  Intro to LGTB Q Studies
  • WGST 344:  Black Lesbian Lives
  • WGST 374/ENGL 375:  LGBTQ Literature


Action on reducing the contact hours for CHEM 341 and 342: Organic Chemistry I and II was deferred until a departmental representative could be present.
