A&S; Curriculum Committee Minutes, 01/22/03

The minutes of the meetings of December 3 and December 10, 2002, were approved as distributed.

The committee's questions about SOC 420: Sociology of Sport and SOC 442/WMST 415/SOC 642/WMST 615 were resolved and those courses were approved.

Changes were approved to the Actuarial Science concentration in the B.S. in Mathematics (effective 03F). MATH 570 and 572 will replace the present requirement for 6 hours from MATH 564, 566, or 567.

Changes to AP and CLEP credit in Chemistry were approved. Effective for students entering in Fall 03, a score of 3 on the AP exam in Chemistry will earn 3 hours of credit which may be used in place of CHEM 201. Scores of 4 or 5 on the AP in Chemistry will earn 6 hours of credit which may be used in place of CHEM 201 and 202. On the CLEP exam a score of 50 or higher will earn 6 hours of credit which may be used in place of CHEM 201 and 202. (This change removes credit for laboratory hours for AP/CLEP exams.)

The committee approved the following policy regarding final examinations. The statement reflects what has been unstated convention in the college. For student guidance it was thought important to have this information available in the catalog.

"It is College policy that no student may be required to take more than two final examinations within a 24-hour period. Students facing such conflicts should inform one or more of their instructors of the situation as early in the semester as possible. Students have a right to expect that their instructors will accommodate them by scheduling a makeup examination in one of the courses. In the event of difficulty in making such arrangements, student should consult the Assistant Dean for Student Support Services in the Arts and Sciences Advising Center."

The following course actions were approved, effective Fall 04 unless otherwise noted:

HIST 303: Field Methods in Archaeology was approved as a new course. It will be cross-listed with the existing ANTH 377. However, not all sections of ANTH 377 will also be available as HIST 303. [effective summer 04]

PHIL 621: Ethical Theory (new course)
PHIL 622: Virtue Ethics (new course)

BIOL 560/660: Ecology of Urban and Suburban Landscapes (new courses)

The committee deferred action on the following, pending discussion with the departments:

• addition of History 101 and 102 to requirements for the major in History.
• COMM 175: Race and Rhetoric, new course proposed for OC and CD1 General Education credit.
• PSYC 690: Practicum in College Teaching, credit hour change
• GEOG 347, GEOG 547, GEOG 549: additional information needed on syllabi
