A&S; Curriculum Committee Minutes, 02/12/02

The minutes of the meeting of January 15 were corrected to reflect that "consent of director" rather than "permission of instructor" would be required for an exception to the 2.75 gpa requirement for admission to the Liberal Studies major. The minutes were further corrected to show that CLEP credit in Spanish could be used in place of SPAN 121, 122, and 123 (rather than 221). With these corrections, the minutes were approved.

The committee discussed the issue of exceptions to maximum load for students planning to graduate in August 2002. With A&S; courses not available in the first summer term, students might need to take more hours in summer terms two and three in order to complete degree requirements. The committee determined that students needing hours to graduate in August 2002 will routinely be given permission to take up to 9 hours in each of the two summer terms. Students wishing to take more than 9 hours per term must petition the Committee on Admissions and Appeals, as must non-August graduates wishing to take more than the regularly established limit of 7 hours per summer term.

The committee approved the deadline of July 1 for students who petition for readmission in the fall, beginning with Fall 2002.

The committee approved changes to Advanced Placement Examination credit in Studio Art. The changes reflect changes made by the AP program. Exam "Studio Art 2-D" with a score of 4 or 5 will earn 3 hours credit which may be used in place of ART 105. Exam "Studio Art 3-D" with a score of 4 or 5 will earn 3 hours credit to be used in place of ART 106. [Exam "Studio Art Drawing Portfolio" will continue to be used in place of ART 115.]

The committee also approved the Fine Arts Department's request to change the admission requirements for the BFA degree. Effective Fall 2002, students must have completed ART 105, 106, 115, 116 and one course at the 300 level in the area of concentration before formal admission to the major. They must also have a minimum 3.0 gpa in studio art courses and must maintain a 2.25 overall to remain in the program.

HUM 384 was approved to count toward the cross-cultural requirement for students under the old General Education program. This reflects its co-listing with HIST 392 which was already approved for that requirement.
