CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES
January 15, 2002

The minutes of the meeting of December 4, 2001, were approved as distributed.
In response to a question from the Advising Center, the committee approved allowing students who are fulfilling requirements under the old general education program to use courses approved for the new general education program in parallel categories, if the courses were taken subsequent to their approval for general education.
The committee approved the request of the Liberal Studies Program to raise the gpa for admission to that major to a 2.75 or consent of program director, effective for students entering Fall 2002, or for returning students who become subject to the 2002-2003 (or subsequent) catalog.
The committee discussed a proposal to recommend that plus and minus options be available for undergraduate grading. It was decided to forward the proposal to the Faculty Assembly without a committee opinion.
BIOL 350: Biostatistics was approved, effective Fall 02. The course will be an option for the statistics requirement in supporting coursework in the Biology degrees. It will not count toward hours in the major.
ENGL 677: Assessing and Responding to Student Writing was approved, and will be forwarded to the Graduate School for review.
COMM 540: Public Communication Campaigns was approved, pending the chairperson's receipt of a revised syllabus. The course will not carry graduate credit.
Departments had been asked to review the new computerized CLEP examinations and to make recommendation for any changes in scoring/credit practices. The following departmental recommendations were approved:
Biology: 3 hours credit for a score of 50 or above, to be used in place of BIOL 102
French: 12 hours credit for a score of 50 or above, to be used in place of FREN 121, 122, 221.
German: 12 hours credit for a score of 50 or above, to be used in place of GERM 121, 122, 221.
History: 3 hours credit for a score of 54 or above on the subject
examination in History of U.S. I, to be used in place of HIST 211.
3 hours credit for a score of 55 or above on the subject examination
History of U.S. II, to be used in place of HIST 212.
3 hours credit for a score of 57 or above on the subject
examination Western Civilization I, to be used in place of
HIST 101.
3 hours credit for a score of 56 or above on the subject examination
Western Civilization II, to be used in place of HIST 102.
Mathematics: 4 hours credit for a score of 50 or above on the subject examination Calculus, to be used in place of MATH 205.
Psychology: 3 hours credit for a score of 55 or above, to be used in place of PSYC 201.
Sociology: 3 hours credit for a score of 50 or above, to be used in place of SOC 209.
Spanish: 12 hours credit for a score of 50 or above, to be used in place of SPAN 121, 122, 123.
As no recommendation was received from the Chemistry Department, the present policy will remain in effect for AY 02-03: 7 hours credit for a score of 50 or better on the examination in General Chemistry, to be used in place of CHEM 201 and 203.
The Committee approved the recommendation from the English Department to discontinue credit for the CLEP examinations in English Composition, with development of a local examination to allow students to test out of and receive credit for English 101 and 102. The final approval of this change is pending approval for the fee for the local examination.
