Evan Gora, PhD student in Biology, studying factors that affect decomposition of wood in the forest canopy in Panama; Evan’s research is funded by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and by the National Geographic Society’s Young Explorers Award.
Benjamin (Max) Adams, PhD student in Biology, studying rainforest structure and biodiversity in the forest canopy in Panama. Max has several large-scale experiments ongoing to determine how vines are important to the maintenance of ant diversity in trees. His research is important to understanding tropical forest ecology, because ants are involved in many key ecological processes, and because the abundance of vines is increasing in these forests. When he is not climbing trees and collecting ants, Max is a major contributor to A&S’s outreach efforts. He has visited several Louisville K-12 schools to explain what scientists do, and he has taken many local elementary school children on insect collecting trips. Most recently, Max took time out of his research schedule to meet with a 9-year old boy who was visiting Panama via the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
