Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

I hope classes go well this week, and that you all enjoy a break from the university to celebrate Thanksgiving. Having recently returned from hearing about A&S situations at other universities, I know there are many reasons for us to feel gratitude to be at the University of Louisville. We have more challenges than we’d like, but also more potential opportunities than many others in higher education.

On another note, next Monday, Dec. 1, we are hosting a reception to honor Jeanie McCabe, Assistant Dean of Finance, and Becky McCandless, Senior Unit Business Manager, for their years of service to the University of Louisville and A&S. Jeanie has worked here for nearly 45 years and we all owe her tremendous thanks for the superior ways in which she has managed the finances of the College of Arts & Sciences. Becky has worked here 38 years, and has had a hand in many things. If you’ve received a paycheck, she’s been involved! Please join us at 2pm in SRB139 to show our heartfelt appreciation for everything that these two remarkable women have done for the College of Arts & Sciences. They will be greatly missed.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Kempf-Leonard
Dean

Important Reminders

Submit Graduate Webpage Plan by Dec. 3

Each A&S department needs to update their graduate webpage by January 31. Please forward your plan for doing so to Derek Davenport by Dec. 3. The plan only needs to include who will do updates and the timeline. Let Derek know if you will need technical or content support from the Dean’s Office in order to finish the updates by Jan. 31. For more information, go here.

A&S Research Opportunities

The following research opportunities and requests for participation have been added to the Announcements section of the A&S Research Office's Blog:

Graduate Faculty List

A&S Graduate Education asks that all chairs review the list of A&S Graduate Faculty posted on the A&S website.

If you see a name that does not belong, please contact Wendy Pfeffer. If you see a faculty member whose career points to senior status, a nomination to Wendy accompanied by a CV can start that change. Review of senior status of A&S faculty is part of the annual review process. If a faculty member is no longer an active researcher, perhaps that faculty member should no longer have senior (aka mentor) status on the A&S Graduate Faculty List.

Missing Syllabi

Please post your syllabus to Blackboard if you are on this list. Many thanks to all who've posted syllabi on Blackboard, and special thanks to all who've taken the trouble to discover why a posted syllabus isn't visible to the program that does the inventory. The Provost's tech team is working on a way to make it possible for a course with many sections that share a syllabus — such as the Chem labs — to avoid the need for multiple postings. If you believe that you've posted your syllabus correctly and your course is still listed here — and it isn't a Chem lab — please email Julia Dietrich.
