CLINICAL TRIAL DONATION - OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS

 

Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky awarded $15,000 to the University of Louisville Research Foundation for our phase I/II clinical trial, Combination Therapy with Liposomal Doxorubicin and Withaferin A (Ashwagandha, ASWD) in Recurrent Ovarian Cancer. 

Dr. Whitney Goldsberry, faculty in the Gynecologic-Oncology division of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women's Health Department is the co-PI with Dr. Sham Kakar. 

They are currently in the early stages of the process; however, they have FDA approval, IRB approval, have submitted an R01 grant that is pending and are awaiting approval from NCI to start recruiting patients. 

Congratulations Dr. Goldsberry for your dedication to women by continuing to search for new and improved ways to improve Women's Health. 

 

COVID in the Maternity Ward

Welcome Whitney Goldsberry MD to our Gynecologic Oncology Division in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women's Health

       Whitney Goldsberry, MD

Dr. Whitney Goldsberry received her MD and four-year residency program at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She then went on to complete her Gynecology Oncology Fellowship at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. When she left our university in 2018, we continued to have hope that she would return and become an addition to our already successful gynecologic-oncology division headed by Dr. Daniel Metzinger, as well as a second faculty member; Dr. Sarah Todd, who we are also very fortunate came back to our University as a specialist.

Dr. Stacy Lenger completed her fellowship training at Washington University in St. Louis before moving to Louisville. She is passionate about helping women and improving their quality of life. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, being outdoors, and crafting. We look forward to her joining our team!

Welcome Edward Miller, MD FACOG to the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women's Health Department

 

Edward Miller, MD FACOG

Dr. Miller was born and raised in Southern California and attended New York University where he studied Anthropology.  His desire to serve and make a difference led him to Wake Forest University School of Medicine where he earned his medical doctorate.  At Wake Forest he fell in love with the field of Maternal Fetal Medicine and decided that caring for mothers and their families was his mission.  He enrolled in residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington DC where he served as House Staff President and received the prestigious resident of the year award. He returned to California to complete fellowship at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) where he received training in ultrasound and the management of high risk pregnancies from leading experts in the field.  During his time at UCSF he authored numerous publications and presentations and developed his passion for leadership in the realm of Diversity and Inclusion as well as medical education.  In his final year of fellowship Dr. Miller was nominated and received the UCSF Innovation award for excellence in Graduate Medical Education.  In his spare time Dr. Miller enjoys cooking, playing volleyball, and growing his bourbon collection.

Welcome to Sarah Todd, MD - Gynecologic Oncology

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Todd, MD to the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women's Health in the Gynecologic Oncology Division.

Sarah Todd, MD

Dr. Sara Todd has joined Dr. Daniel Metzinger and the team at Uof L Physicians – Gynecologic Oncology. She is available to see patients at UofL James Graham Brown Cancer Center and performs surgery at UofL Hospital.

Dr. Todd is trained in robotic surgery utilizing the da Vinci XL system and is brining HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy) as a treatment option for select advanced ovarian cancer patients.

Dr. Todd graduated from UofL School of Medicine in 2011 and continued residency at UofL training under Daniel Metzinger, MD, gynecologic oncologist and head of robotic surgery. She completed fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of South Florida/Moffitt Cancer Center.

Center for Women & Infants at UofL Hospital named a Baby-Friendly Designated birthing facility

The University of Louisville Center for Women & Infants at UofL Hospital has been named a Baby-Friendly Designated birthing facility by Baby-Friendly USA, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. The UofL Center for Women & Infants is the only Downtown Louisville facility and the fourth facility in Kentucky to earn the designation. Currently there are 405 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birthing centers in the United States and more than 20,000 worldwide.

Dr. Sean Francis, MD Approved by the UofL Board of Trustees as Chair of the Department of OB/GYN & Women's Health

Sean L. Francis, currently the interim chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at the University of Louisville, has been named to the post permanently. The appointment was approved by the UofL Board of Trustees at its Jan. 14 meeting.

OB/GYN & Women's Health Faculty Honored at Fall Honors Convocation

Dr. Marvin Yussman, Vice Chair of Academic and Clinical Affairs, was awarded the Dean's Education Award for Distinguished Educator.  Dr. Yussman was recognized for his accomplishments in the area of teaching and his commitment to educating future physicians.

Dr. Petruska was awarded the Golden Apple Award by the UofL Medical School Students Class of 2016.  The Golden Apple Award is given to faculty who demonstrate outstanding teamwork, professional responsibility, and consideration of medical students.

Dr. Franklin Awarded the ACOG Award for Outstanding District Service (ODS)

Congratulations to Dr. Tanya Franklin on being chosen to receive The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Award for Outstanding District Service (ODS).  Dr. Franklin, was recognized, along with the other ODS Award recipients, during the Presidential Inauguration and Convocation held at the 2015 Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting in San Francisco, California on Wednesday May 6, 2015.

Dr. Franklin, assistant professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, graduated from that school with a joint degree in medicine and a master’s in public health with a clinical investigation emphasis.

In July 2011, she received grant funding to establish the Ryan Residency Training Program in Family Planning. Dr. Franklin has received the Outstanding Educator Award for her accomplishments in developing a new curriculum, a new clinical service, and a regional patient referral site.

As District V Junior Fellow vice-chair, chair, and immediate past chair from 2011-2014, she revitalized Junior Fellow involvement and activity. She also organized the first Legislative Day in Kentucky this year, helping physicians advocate and build relationships with state legislators.
