Transcath Aortic Valve

EDWARDS SAPIEN® BIOPROSTHETIC AORTIC VALVE

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation/replacement (TAVI/R) is an alternative form of valve replacement for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are non-surgical candidates. Following the recent completion of the the PARTNER I -Placement of AoRTic TraNscathetER Valves Trial (http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00530894) the Edwards SAPIEN valve awaits full approval for its wide-spread use in the United States. This system utilizes the same transcatheter, non-surgical approach used in coronary stenting and the same intracardiac approach used in aortic valvuloplasty; both performed via access from the groin arteries. The University of Louisville and Jewish Hospital have been chosen to participate in the the PARTNER II trial which is testing the efficacy of the newest form of SAPIEN valve, the SAPIEN XT in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who are not candidates for surgery. Jewish Hospital has been selected as the only hospital in the Region and state where trial (PARTNER II) use of the SAPIEN valve is permitted. More information about the procedure.
