J. Murray Kinsman, M.D.

J. Murray Kinsman, born in Nova Scotia, earned his BA in 1918 at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, and his medical degree in 1922 from McGill University.

He served an internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and held an instructorship at McGill, and then worked at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and at New Haven Hospital.

In 1925 he came to the University of Louisville as an instructor in medicine and progressed to professor of medicine in 1946.

In 1949, he became chairman of the Department of Medicine and dean of the School of Medicine, continuing as chairman until 1956 and as dean until 1963.

He then served as vice-president of the University until 1966. He was made professor emeritus of medicine in 1970.

His research was mainly in cardiology and infectious diseases. With John Walker Moore, he developed a dye-dilution method of determining cardiac output.

He also wrote the article on osteopathy for Encyclopaedia Britannica and was the first physician director of the Louisville Chamber of Commerce.
